SIE Santa Monica Studio released this action RPG in April 2018 for PlayStation 4 before it arrived on PC later. It serves as a soft reboot that shifts focus from Greek mythology to the harsh Norse realms. You control an older Kratos who lives with his son Atreus after killing the Olympian gods years ago. The pair set out to scatter Faye's ashes at the highest peak in Midgard. This title trades the chaotic, one-man army spectacle of previous entries for a tighter narrative about fatherhood and survival. It is a single-player adventure that demands you master combat while managing a complex relationship with your companion.
The experience centers on real-time hacking and slashing using Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos. You swing the axe in rhythmic combos, parry incoming attacks, and switch weapons instantly to counter different enemy types. Atreus acts as a ranged support unit who shoots arrows or throws rocks based on your commands. The game features an over-the-shoulder camera that keeps the action intimate and claustrophobic during fights. You explore interconnected areas of Midgard by climbing ladders, solving environmental puzzles, and finding hidden lore. Combat feels weighty with meaningful cooldowns for special abilities rather than spamming button mashes to win encounters easily.
Critics and players alike have treated this release as a massive success. Metacritic awarded it a 94 out of 100 while IGDB shows a 94.2 rating based on 3,304 user scores. The community vibes reflect a serious tone with votes for Atmospheric, Hardcore, Strategic, and Emotional moods. Most players find the difficulty challenging enough to require strategy rather than just reflexes. Average playtime suggests people spend dozens of hours completing main quests and optional challenges. Review snippets highlight how the relationship between Kratos and Atreus drives the emotional weight of the experience. The game holds a high completion rate among those who buy it at the cheapest price of 39.99 dollars.
This title is essential for anyone who enjoys deep character arcs mixed with punishing combat systems. It offers over 40 hours of content if you chase all achievements and side quests fully. The price point around 40 dollars on sites like Green Man Gaming makes it a solid buy compared to other AAA releases. You will not find a generic hero here but rather a flawed man learning to be better for his child. If you want a single-player story with genuine stakes and tight mechanics, this game delivers without filler content or microtransactions. It stands as a benchmark for modern action games on both console and PC platforms.
Many years have passed since Kratos, Spartan warrior and former Greek God of War, took his vengeance against the Greek Gods, and he now lives with his young son Atreus in ancient Norway in the realm of Midgard. The game begins after the death of the Jötunn warrior Faye, Kratos' second wife and Atreus' mother, whose last request was for her ashes to be spread at the highest speak of the nine realms. Kratos and Atreus prepare a funeral pyre for her, mourn her death and soon go on a hunt as per Kratos' desire. However much to Kratos' disappointment, Atreus proves his incompetence and lack of focus, making Kratos reconsider taking Atreus in his journey. Kratos is soon attacked by a mysterious stranger with godlike powers, and who cannot feel anything physically. After seemingly killing him, Kratos reluctantly takes Atreus with him and begins their journey.
