About God of War

Santa Monica Studio released this title in 2005 as the first entry in the franchise that would define PlayStation's action catalog. You play as Kratos, a Spartan general bound to Ares by a bloody pact after surviving a desperate battle. The game follows Greek mythology closely while twisting it into a story of betrayal and revenge. Athena tasks you with hunting down the God of War himself after he tricks Kratos into killing his own family. Your skin turns white from the ashes of your dead loved ones, marking you as the Ghost of Sparta. This single-player adventure launched on PlayStation 2 before expanding to other platforms years later. It set a new standard for character-driven action games during that generation.

Gameplay

You move through ancient Greece levels using tight platforming and brutal melee combat. The Blades of Chaos attach chains to your wrists, letting you swing across gaps or drag enemies close for execution. Combat feels weighty as you learn to chain combos together while dodging attacks from gods and monsters alike. You face boss battles that require pattern recognition rather than just button mashing. Puzzle elements appear frequently in the form of environmental puzzles where you must manipulate objects or find hidden paths. The camera stays fixed behind Kratos, forcing you to manage your position carefully during chaotic fights. You collect red orbs to buy new abilities and unlock hidden lore items scattered throughout the world. Each level ends with a massive boss that tests everything you have learned so far.

What Players Think

Players rate this game highly at 88.5 out of 100 based on over a thousand reviews. The community vibes show a strong preference for story-driven experiences and hardcore difficulty challenges. Some players describe the atmosphere as chaotic while others find it deeply emotional due to Kratos' tragic past. Average playtime hovers around 12 hours for a standard run, though completionists spend much longer hunting every secret. Review snippets often mention the satisfying weight of the combat and the shocking narrative twists. The game holds up well even years after release because the core mechanics remain solid. Green Man Gaming lists the cheapest price at $39.99 for those looking to buy it now.

PlayPile's Take

This title is worth your time if you want a focused single-player action experience with a strong narrative. The combat system rewards patience and precision rather than mindless button pressing. You get a complete story arc without needing any other games to understand the context. At $39.99, it offers excellent value compared to modern AAA releases. There are no multiplayer modes or microtransactions to distract from the main campaign. The achievement list encourages thorough exploration of the world rather than just finishing the game. Play this if you enjoy mythological settings and characters driven by trauma and rage.

Storyline

Kratos is a warrior who serves the Greek gods of Olympus. Flashbacks reveal that he was once a successful captain in the Spartan army and led his men to several victories before being defeated by a barbarian king. Facing death, Kratos called on the God of War, Ares, whom he promised to serve if the god would spare his men and provide the power to destroy their enemies. Ares agreed and bonded the Blades of Chaos, a pair of chained blades forged in the depths of Tartarus, to his new servant. Kratos, equipped with the blades, then decapitated the barbarian king.[23] Kratos waged war at the behest of Ares, eventually leading an attack on a village occupied by worshipers of Athena. Ares had secretly transported Kratos' wife and child to the village; during his frenzied attack on its temple, Kratos accidentally killed them. Although Ares believed this act would free Kratos to become the perfect warrior, the Spartan instead renounced his pledge of servitude to the god. The oracle of the destroyed village cursed Kratos by bonding the ashes of his dead family to his skin, turning it ash-white and earning him the nickname, "Ghost of Sparta". Plagued by nightmares of his horrible deed, Kratos vowed to serve the other gods in hope of ridding himself of the visions.
