Godzilla: Save the Earth is a monster brawler that pits players against iconic kaiju in arena-style combat. Released in 2004 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, it continues the series’ focus on fast-paced battles with a roster of classic and new creatures. Fight through stages set in cities and oceans while using special attacks, environmental hazards, and timed combos. Single-player campaigns alternate between solo combat and team battles, while multiplayer and co-op modes let you join forces or face off locally. The game adds vehicle segments and boss fights to its formula, mixing platforming with monster mayhem. The game’s appeal lies in its mix of familiar Godzilla lore and varied gameplay. Players wrestle with SpaceGodzilla, a towering alien rival, and encounter the Vortaak’s sci-fi twist on kaiju warfare. While not as polished as later entries, it maintains the chaotic energy of the series with over 20 playable monsters and stages. Though dated by modern standards, it holds a 76% on Metacritic, with fans praising its accessibility and co-op play. The DNA-based power-ups and over-the-top finishers keep battles feeling distinct, even two decades after release.
Save the Earth takes place two years after Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee. The story involves mankind getting hold of Godzilla's DNA, known in the game as "G-Cells." The Vortaak learn of this, once again returning to Earth, controlling a vast army of monsters, including their ultimate weapon: SpaceGodzilla. The player faces down many controlled monsters in different locations. In the climax cut-scene, Godzilla confronts SpaceGodzilla in a final duel. Godzilla blasts off SpaceGodzilla's shoulder crystals causing a black hole to form. SpaceGodzilla is sucked in and apparently killed, forcing the Vortaak to retreat while Godzilla lets out a victorious roar, having saved the Earth yet again.
