Gogetsuji Legends is a 1995 arcade fighter from Atlus that adds a twist to the genre with its 2v2 format. Instead of switching characters mid-fight, players pick two characters upfront: the first is the Leader, the second is the Partner. The Partner starts each round and reverts to the Leader if defeated, with health replenished for the next round. This setup adds a layer of strategy as matchups and health management shift the flow of battles. The game supports single-player and multiplayer modes, focusing on one-on-one duels with a secondary character acting as a fallback. The roster includes 17 characters, though two were originally transformations from earlier games and one is restricted to partner-only use. While the system felt ahead of its time, it didn’t stick around long, later entries in the series adopted similar mechanics but allowed mid-fight swaps. Community interest remains niche, with players noting its influence on tag-team fight design despite its short lifespan.
