Golf by HAL Laboratory is a simple golf simulation that lets you swing your way through short courses. Using the + Control Pad you aim and hit the ball while a map onscreen shows the hole and obstacles nearby. Different clubs change shot power and direction as you try to land the ball in few strokes. The game runs on older systems but plays with enough clarity to keep rounds feeling smooth. The golfer is later linked to one of Nintendo’s most recognizable characters though they wear a plain shirt and hat here. Split screen lets two compete directly with separate screens making matches fast and competitive. As one of the first golf games ever it’s a rough-mowed ancestor to modern sports titles. The lack of polish doesn’t matter when the basic fun of whacking pixels into holes kicks in.
