Gradius Gaiden is a side-scrolling shooter that follows the Gradius series' formula of dodging waves of enemies while upgrading your ship. Set between entries III and IV, it pits players against a mysterious force emerging from a nebula called the Dark Range. Four Hyper Space Fighters lead a desperate assault, each with distinct weapons and progression trees. The game emphasizes precise movement and power-up management as you navigate tightly packed levels filled with bosses and environmental hazards. Single-player mode focuses on high scores, while cooperative multiplayer lets two players team up to survive the onslaught. The game’s appeal lies in its tight controls and escalating difficulty curve.
