About

Gradius Galaxies is a side-scrolling shooter that tasks you with piloting a ship through waves of enemies and destructible environments. Released in 2001 for the Game Boy Advance, it follows the same bullet-dodging, power-up collecting formula that defined the series. You'll navigate linear stages filled with mechanical enemies, dropping bombs and upgrading your ship to survive escalating boss fights. The controls are tight but limited by the handheld’s hardware, with on-screen buttons handling movement, shooting, and special attacks. The game’s main hook is its placement in the Gradius timeline between two mainline entries, giving it a plot that ties into the series’ lore without feeling essential. It runs in a blocky, 16-bit style that fits the handheld’s capabilities, with stages that mix static backgrounds and scrolling hazards. Though it lacks multiplayer or modern conveniences, it remains the only Gradius game on the GBA, a fact that makes it a point of curiosity for longtime fans. Community chatter often notes its solid challenge but limited innovation, with scores averaging mid-70s on retro gaming forums.

Storyline

The game's plot is set between Gradius III and Gradius Gaiden. Bacterion was developing a powerful weapon to use against the planet Gradius, but it was destroyed. A few years later it crashed on a planet and the planet gradually changed into a mechanical fortress. The planet Gradius then sent the Vic Viper to stop it.
