Gradius V is a side-scrolling shooter that tightens the controls and adds fresh twists to the formula. You pilot a ship through waves of enemies while managing limited power-up capsules to upgrade your arsenal. A key change lets you adjust the direction of support pods using the analog stick, letting you lay down covering fire without moving your main ship. This creates moments where you have to balance staying still for precision shots against the danger of being exposed. The game supports solo play or teaming up with another player locally. The split-screen co-op and refined handling keep it feeling modern despite its 2004 release. While it's no longer available on newer platforms after its PS3 re-release, fans of classic shoot-'em-ups still rate it highly for the way it mixes strategic risk with fast reflexes. The PS2 version's tighter level design and weapon variety also get frequent praise in retro shooter circles.
