Granbo is a turn-based RPG for the Game Boy Advance that tasks you with guiding Kakeru as he fights to prevent an apocalyptic threat. Combat takes place on a grid where robotic animals serve as both weapons and companions. You manage resources carefully while navigating a story focused on Kakeru’s personal growth and the escalating stakes of his mission. Exploration is limited to a handful of pre-rendered environments but the pacing keeps the experience brisk. Despite a 2001 release and Japan-only debut the game has gained a niche following for its quirky charm and straightforward mechanics. A 2016 Virtual Console port on Wii U brought it back to attention though it remains largely overlooked outside of retro circles. Granbo’s blend of simple strategy and underdog narrative has earned it a 7.2 average on Japanese review sites but it’s the robotic animal battles that stick with fans.
