Gray Matter is a point-and-click adventure where you switch between two perspectives to figure out a strange series of events. Dr. David Styles and his assistant Samantha Everett conduct an experiment at Oxford that spirals into unexplained phenomena. The gameplay revolves around exploring environments, solving environmental puzzles, and piecing together a story that blurs the line between science and surrealism. The narrative unfolds through dialogue and investigation, with each character offering distinct insights into escalating mysteries. Set on college campuses and shifting between reality and abstract spaces, the game leans into its cerebral themes without overwhelming players with jargon. The game’s greatest strength lies in its tightly written story and the way it challenges perceptions of truth and consciousness. While not graphically ambitious by modern standards, its focus on character dynamics and philosophical questions has earned it a cult following. Players often highlight the twist-laden plot and the effective use of dual protagonists to create tension. Available on PC and older consoles, it remains a niche title for those who enjoy dialogue-driven mysteries with a psychological edge. Some critics note its pacing slows in the second act, but the final act’s revelations keep the experience memorable.
When student and part-time street performer Samantha Everett shows up at his doorstep, she unexpectedly becomes his assistant. Hailing from America, she has been travelling through most of Europe the last couple years. Her first task: finding six test subjects at Oxford University for one of Styles` experiments. The experiment starts off innocently enough, but then inexplicable incidents start mounting.
