About

Guardian Heroes is a side-scrolling brawler with RPG layers from Treasure that lets you play as one of four fighters, each with distinct movesets. Team up locally to tackle story missions where your choices shape the path forward, or face off in arena battles with up to six players. Combat mixes fast button-mashing with light strategy, as you mash through hordes of enemies and boss fights that demand precise timing. The story follows a group of adventurers who grab a magical sword and get dragged into a centuries-old spiritual war, though the focus stays firmly on the punchy action. The game stands out for its fluid multiplayer options and the way it blends brawler simplicity with branching narratives, a rarity in 1996. Critics praised its tight controls and replayability, and retro communities still highlight its co-op as a highlight of the Sega Saturn era. While the plot leans into fantasy tropes, the focus on varied fighters and chaotic combat keeps it engaging. A solid pick for fans of old-school brawlers looking for depth beyond the hits.

Storyline

A supreme being created the universe to find ultimate warriors to hire as its personal soldiers. A vicious battle was waged between the Earth and Sky Spirits. The Sky Spirits bestowed incredible powers upon the humans, effectively making powerful wizards for their own gain. The human wizards joined the effort against the Earth Spirits, banishing them into the darkness. Soon after this was accomplished, the Sky Spirits grew fearful and jealous of the humans, and banished them all into the darkness with the Earth Spirits. Mankind instead opted for a more physical approach to life, and the Time of the Sword began.
