Gumshoe is a 1984 platform game set in a maze of high-rise buildings. You control a detective navigating ten tower blocks to locate a missing girl. Each screen shows a small section of the complex, scrolling as you move left, right, up, or down. Ladders, elevators, and escalators shift unpredictably, escalators reverse direction at intervals, elevators skip levels randomly, and trash chutes fling you to distant areas. The challenge lies in mapping paths through these constantly changing layouts while avoiding patrolling enemies. The game stands out for its tight, time-sensitive navigation. Players must memorize shifting routes and adapt quickly to environmental changes. With its Commodore 64 roots and minimalistic graphics, it feels like a relic of early platform design. The lack of save points and relentless enemy movement make it tough even for seasoned players. Released over 40 years ago, it remains a niche test of spatial reasoning and reflexes.
