.Hack//Infection is a role-playing game wrapped in a digital mystery. You play Kite, a player of The World, a fictional MMORPG that exists as a self-contained experience on PlayStation 2. The story unfolds as you follow Kite’s investigation into why some users fall into comatose states after logging in. Gameplay mixes traditional RPG elements with beat ’em up combat against pixelated enemies. Progression involves leveling up, managing gear, and solving environmental puzzles while navigating a plot that shifts from action to narrative in quick cuts. The World’s lore is delivered through in-game text logs and cutscenes that hint at a larger digital conspiracy. This game launched a multimedia project that expanded into anime, novels, and more. The series built a dedicated fanbase for its layered storytelling and how each entry connects to the next. The PlayStation 2 version remains the most accessible entry point, with its standalone story and self-contained combat. While the combat can feel dated by modern standards, the narrative’s blend of cyberpunk themes and character-driven drama holds up. Fans of RPGs with heavy plot threads and side content like bonus DVDs may find it rewarding.
The game opens with an excerpt from Emma Wielant's Epitaph of Twilight and is followed by a name input screen. This is where the user name and the character name are entered. For consistency's sake, the main character will be referred to as Kite, the default name for the character. Kite has been invited by his friend, Yasuhiko, to play The World. While Yasuhiko, known as the legendary player Orca, shows Kite the ropes, the two encounter Aura. Just as Aura is about to entrust Orca with the Book of Twilight, Skeith attacks. Orca tries to defend himself and Kite but is no match for Skeith and ends up being Data Drained. Just as Skeith is about to do the same to Kite, someone distracts Skeith and transports Kite to Net Slum. There, the Book of Twilight is added to his inventory. It was at this time that The World's servers crashed.
