Hakuoki Reimeiroku is a visual novel set in Japan’s waning Edo period. You follow Ibuki Ryuunosuke, a drifter who stumbles into Kyoto’s Mibu Roushigumi just as the group solidifies into the Shinsengumi. Through branching dialogue and static scenes, the game traces Ibuki’s reluctant bond with the unit’s members while charting their rise from a fledgling force to a key player in the country’s turbulent transition. The PlayStation 2 original leans heavily on narrative, with minimal interactive elements beyond choice-based conversations and relationship progression. The title appeals to fans of historical fiction and character-driven stories. As a prequel to the Hakuouki series, it offers deeper context on the Shinsengumi’s origins and early conflicts, though it stands alone as a self-contained tale. Community ratings highlight its detailed worldbuilding and nuanced cast, though some note the dated presentation feels stiff by modern standards. At 20 hours on average, it’s a brisk but rewarding look at a pivotal moment in the franchise’s lore.
Years before the beginning of Hakuouki, the Shinsengumi was known as the Mibu Roushigumi. A wandering young man named Ibuki Ryuunosuke falls in with the group by chance just after they first come to Kyoto, and while grudgingly making friends with the members within, witnesses the dawning era of the Shinsengumi.
