Hakuoki Shinkai Reimeiroku is a visual novel set in the origins of the Shinsengumi, a historical samurai group. You take on the role of a male outsider who stumbles into the faction during its early days in Kyoto. Instead of pursuing romantic relationships, the focus is on building bonds with key members through dialogue choices and scenario exploration. The story spans the group’s formative years, blending historical events with character-driven moments. Players can unlock additional scenarios that expand on the main narrative, offering deeper insights into the cast’s motivations and conflicts. The game stands out for its mature themes and detailed portrayal of pre-Meiji Japan, appealing to fans of narrative-driven stories with historical settings. With all previously released extra content compiled into one package, it provides a comprehensive look at the Shinsengumi’s roots. Available on Nintendo Switch, it runs as a single-player experience with branching paths that influence relationships and outcomes. Community feedback highlights the well-written characters and engaging worldbuilding, though the lack of English support may limit its reach. At 150 minutes of average playtime, it’s a substantial but self-contained story for those drawn to its era and themes.
Years before the beginning of Hakuouki, the Shinsengumi was known as the Mibu Roushigumi. A wandering young man named Ibuki Ryuunosuke falls in with the group by chance just after they first come to Kyoto, and while grudgingly making friends with the members within, witnesses the dawning era of the Shinsengumi.
