Third entry in the Hakuouki series leans into comedy with a lighter tone. You follow Chizuru as she accidentally triggers a chaotic chibi transformation in the Shinsengumi crew after finding a mysterious box. Gameplay splits between standard visual novel scenes, goofy chibi-ized dialogue, and six mini-games that mix puzzle, rhythm, and action elements. Choices and performance in these diversions influence progression toward restoring normalcy. The charm comes from exaggerated character designs in chibi mode and the abrupt shift from dramatic to playful tones. Mini-games add variety though difficulty spikes mid-way through. With a runtime around 20 hours, it balances narrative and gameplay better than most entries in the genre. Fans of Otomate’s prior work might appreciate the callbacks while newcomers can enjoy the self-contained silliness.

Storyline

Chizuru notices that the members of Shinsengumi are secretly having a meeting and so Hijikata tells her to report to him if she finds out anything. She overhears Itou talking about how he lost something precious and that he has to find it before it falls in the other members' hands. When Chizuru finds and opens the box that Itou lost, suddenly everyone goes into chibi mode and now Chizuru (and your dude of choice) have to figure out a way to return back to normal. The challenge is, you must successfully pass a bunch of mini games to get to the bottom of things!
