Harald Hårdtand is a side-scrolling shooter where you play a tooth with limbs and a bowtie defending against bacterial invaders. The game blends platforming and shooting mechanics as you navigate levels made of stacked platforms. Harald’s primary weapon is a toothpaste cannon which he fires to weaken enemies. Each hit depletes his limited paste supply forcing you to collect refills scattered throughout levels. Bacteria inflict damage on contact while optional power-ups like dual-shot upgrades add variety. Movement focuses on precise jumping between platforms with falls from low ledges being safe but bottomless drops costing lives. The game’s advergame roots are obvious in its premise and power-up design. Every element ties back to Colgate’s dental care messaging with bacteria serving as literal plaque targets. The character design and level structure feel dated by modern standards but the core loop of shooting and collecting remains functional. A curiosity for retro gaming fans and a relic of 90s brand-driven software. Its DOS Amiga and C64 releases made it one of the earliest examples of edutainment-style gaming.
