About Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

KnowWonder developed this 2004 adventure platformer for PC under an Electronic Arts license. It serves as a direct sequel to the Chamber of Secrets title but covers the third book's plotline. You start your journey on the Hogwarts Express before arriving at the castle grounds. The game lets you switch between Harry, Ron, and Hermione to tackle different challenges. Your main goal involves casting spells, solving environmental puzzles, and fighting off enemies like Dementors. Between missions, you roam the school freely to find hidden items and unlock secrets scattered throughout the world.

Gameplay

You spend most of your time navigating 3D environments as one of three characters. Each wizard brings specific abilities to solve puzzles or access new areas. The core loop involves exploring the castle grounds, finding Every Flavour Beans and Cauldron Cakes to use as currency. You trade these treats for Collectors Cards and portrait passwords that reveal secret zones. Combat relies on timing spell casts against various foes. Classes teach you new magic skills needed for progression. The controls feel responsive during platforming sequences but can get tricky when switching characters mid-mission or aiming spells in tight spaces.

What Players Think

PlayPile data shows a solid reception from our users and critics alike. IGDB lists 186 ratings with an average score of 74.3 out of 100. Our community members report an average playtime of roughly 12 hours to finish the main campaign. Completion rates hover around 68 percent, suggesting some players get stuck on specific puzzles or miss collectibles. Community mood trackers indicate a nostalgic vibe with 42 percent of recent reviews describing the game as "fun" and 31 percent calling it "challenging." Several users noted that finding all hidden beans takes significantly longer than the standard playthrough suggests.

PlayPile's Take

This title is worth buying if you own a PC and want to revisit the third book's story without modern graphics. The price remains reasonable for a 2004 release on second hand markets. You will earn 35 achievements including hidden collectible completions that require thorough exploration of every corner. The game struggles with camera angles during combat but shines during puzzle solving. It is not for players seeking tight platforming mechanics or high replay value. Finish the main story once and you have likely seen everything there is to see in this world.

Storyline

The games follows Harry Potter along with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger as they return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Prisoner Sirius Black has escaped the wizard prison Azkaban, and is supposedly ready to attack Harry in Hogwarts. The game begins on the Hogwarts Express, ignoring the events at Harry's home. Upon reaching Hogwarts, the trio follow the events of the novel, and learn magic by attending classes.
