Harukanaru Toki no Naka de is a turn-based RPG with adventure and simulation elements set in a fantasy version of Heian-era Kyoto. Three high school friends fall into a well and wake up in a world ruled by rival clans. As Akane, you navigate political intrigue, build relationships with allies, and manage resources to counter a threat from the Oni Clan. Combat uses a grid-based system with skill trees and character progression. Exploration mixes narrative-driven quests with time management mechanics as you balance duties and personal bonds. The game’s soundtrack by Yasuhiro Misawa remains a standout element, blending traditional Japanese instruments with emotional orchestration. Though lesser-known outside Japan, it’s the foundation of a long-running series with over a dozen entries and the most spin-offs in the Neoromance franchise. Originally released on PlayStation and Game Boy Advance, its dual-platform design let players switch between systems. Longtime fans praise its character dynamics and historical setting, with niche communities still dissecting its lore and tactical depth.
On the first day of a new school term, high school student Akane Motomiya, her classmate Tenma Morimura, and their underclass friend Shimon Nagareyama are sucked into a mysterious old well. When they awake, they are in Kyō, another world that resembles Kyoto during the Heian Period. According to the young scion of the Star Clan, Fujihime, Akane is the Ryūjin no Miko, who has come to save Kyō from the ambitions of the Oni Clan. In this task, the Akane has the help of eight men known as the Hachiyō, and her friends Tenma and Shimon number among them. Initially, Akane is bewildered by her new circumstances, but she gradually comes to face up to her own destiny and understand the world of Kyō.
