Hayato's Journey is a retro-style platformer built for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and PC. Developed by Master Linkuei, it plays like a direct descendant of classic 16-bit action games, blending tight platforming with sword-based combat. You control Hayato, a warrior navigating overworld maps and side-scrolling levels filled with monsters, traps, and boss fights. The goal is straightforward: track down the evil Warlock Yonensai, who’s hunting the last of the Dragon family, while rescuing a captured companion. The Scorpion Engine powers the game, offering smoother visuals and mechanics than typical Mega Drive titles without breaking the system’s aesthetic. This project stands out as one of the few fully realized homebrew games for the Genesis, using modern tools to push the hardware. Its story borrows from shonen manga tropes, revenge, ancient relics, and a kidnapped love interest, but the execution feels fresh for niche retro fans. While it won’t rival industry giants, the game’s technical ambition and faithful homage to 90s-era design have earned praise in hobbyist circles. Storyline

Hayato is the last descendent of the Great Hayato, a legendary member of the Dragon family that fight against the evil Warlock centuries ago. On this battle, Great Hayato recovered the 5 Secret Scrolls and the Sacred Sword of the Dragon King. On this journey, the Evil Warlock called Yonensai, returned from the Demon World searching for vengeance annihilating the remaining Dragon family descendents. Hayato, equipped with the Sword of the Dragon King, cross the land dominated by Evil Entities, Warlocks and Wicked Beasts to revenge his master, killed by the Evil Warlock henchmen and also to save his beloved Sakura that was kidnaped by the Yonensai, the evil Warlock itself.
