Heroes of Might and Magic: A Strategic Quest swaps dungeon crawling for kingdom building in this turn-based strategy game. You control Lord Morglin Ironfist, a exiled noble fighting to claim the war-torn realm of Enroth. Gameplay balances base construction, hero recruitment, and tactical map battles. Each turn requires managing resource towns, upgrading units, and positioning squads of knights or goblins to outmaneuver rival warlords. Combat resolves with simplified grid-based fights where unit types and terrain provide key advantages. The single-player campaign offers branching choices, while local multiplayer lets friends clash over custom maps. Released in 1995, this DOS title laid the foundation for a long-running series. The 1996 Windows update added a map editor and random terrain generator, extending replayability. Though its 4.3/10 Metacritic score reflects dated graphics, fans praise its strategic depth and foundational influence on modern tactics games. Over 20 years later, the core loop of base management and turn-based skirmishes still resonates with strategy purists. The included King’s Bounty demo offers an extra diversion, but the real draw remains conquering Enroth one hex at a time.
Heroes of Might and Magic tells the story of Lord Morglin Ironfist, who is forced to flee his homeland through a magical portal, because his cousin, Ragnar, had usurped the throne after his uncle, Ragnar's father, killed Ironfist's father, the legitimate owner of the throne. He finds himself along with his few followers in a strange and uncharted land, called Enroth. The land is unruled but contested by Ironfist and three other warlords: the barbarian Lord Slayer, the sorceress Queen Lamanda, and the warlock Lord Alamar. In the canonical storyline, Lord Ironfist defeats his three opponents and founds a new kingdom in Enroth. It is possible for the player to lead the other factions to victory, however this is not reflected in the following games of the Heroes of Might and Magic series.
