Hinterland tasks you with managing a settlement while engaging in real-time combat. You gather resources, assign roles, and defend against waves of enemies. Choose between melee brawlers or ranged defenders, then watch your team clash with orc camps or undead hordes. Base building focuses on placement and production, assign miners to extract ore, farmers to grow food, and soldiers to hold the front lines. Combat and strategy feed into each other. A poorly placed wall can collapse during an attack. A depleted resource stockpile might leave you unable to craft critical weapons. The game emphasizes replayability through shifting environments. Every new location offers different terrain, starting tools, and enemy types. Early games might involve fending off goblins in a swamp. Later runs could pit you against dark elf raiders in a desert. Over 50 character archetypes let you tailor squads to specific playstyles. While some players favor brute force with heavy armor and axes, others build ranged sniping outposts or trap-filled defensive lines. With no multiplayer and a runtime averaging 8, 12 hours per playthrough, it leans into tight, focused sessions.
