Hack and slash action meets head to head combat in Hiryuu no Ken S. This 1992 Super Famicom title tasks players with clearing waves of enemies in a side scrolling brawler before transitioning to one on one fighting matches. The single player campaign follows a straightforward path through colorful but simple stages while the multiplayer mode lets two players face off in arena style bouts. Basic controls focus on fast paced punches kicks and throws with minimal special moves. The hybrid approach sets this apart from typical brawlers or fighters. While the beat 'em up sections feel dated by modern standards the direct combat mechanics hold up better than most 90s arcade ports. It established a formula refined in later entries including the US released Ultimate Fighter. Casual players might find the learning curve steep but the tight hit detection and responsive controls keep matches engaging. A relic of early 90s Japanese gaming that still works as a no frills action showcase.
