About

This cartridge packs two early sports titles: a hockey game and a soccer game, both stripped to basics. In each, you control the player nearest the ball or puck with a joystick, while the goalkeeper mirrors your movements. Body checks freeze opponents, requiring a directional stick to break free. Hockey! uses three 5-minute periods, while Soccer! halves that to two. Mechanics differ slightly - in soccer, hitting the ball with your head or legs sends it flying, and over-crowding stops play entirely. Both rely on simple button presses for shots, with rudimentary animations and minimal sound effects. What sticks is the straightforward control scheme and the way physical play disrupts flow. The hockey title's three-period structure feels more structured than soccer's abrupt stoppages. Neither game uses color or complex scoring, but they capture basic sports action through physical contact and positional play. Released just before 1980, these games sit as some of the earliest digital attempts to simulate team sports, with gameplay that feels more like abstracted chaos than strategy. The dual-title approach gives a bit of variety, though both play similarly despite different rules.
