Hokuto no Ken is a side-scrolling brawler that brings the Fist of the North Star’s violent spirit to pixelated chaos. As Kenshiro, you battle through stages filled with hordes of enemies and tough bosses, using a mix of punches, kicks, and signature moves to clear paths toward each level’s objective. The game supports single-player runs or teaming up with a partner, though the action remains focused on brutal close-quarters combat. Despite its license, the game diverges from the source material’s story, offering a simplified but fast-paced experience that prioritizes fighting over narrative. A few quirks stand out, the cover’s Rei character is absent in gameplay, and the levels feel more generic than faithful to the anime’s lore. The game’s lead programmer, Yuji Naka, later became a key figure in the Sonic franchise, and his work here shows early polish in level design and responsiveness. A 2004 Sega Ages 2500 remake added quality-of-life tweaks, while the Wii Virtual Console brought it to modern systems. The Western Master System port, Black Belt, stripped the Hokuto no Ken branding and altered visuals, distancing it further from the source. Though not a deep or long-lasting title, it remains a brisk, no-nonsense beat ’em up with historical significance for Sega fans.
