Holomento is a permadeath RPG where survival hinges on navigating a cursed land filled with shifting dungeons and hostile townsfolk. You play as a traveler forced to cross Eventide Hollow, a decaying kingdom trapped in a cycle of ruin. Each death adds your soul to a mystical book, the Holomento, which binds you to the land until you rebuild its villages and break the curse. Progress feels fragile but purposeful as you face procedurally generated challenges layered over a hand-designed world. The game stands out for blending structured exploration with unpredictable combat. Players praise its tense balance between risk and reward, with a 78% critic score on Metacritic highlighting its creative approach to permadeath. The lore of trapped souls and a dying kingdom adds weight to every decision, though the slow pacing might test patience. Its mix of open-world discovery and roguelike consequences carves out a niche for fans of methodical, story-driven RPGs.
Eventide Hollow was a lovely kingdom where its people lived in peace. It was once a vast land with free roaming folks and expanding villages, but now it is filled with darkness, strange creatures, and guarded townsfolk. It seems peace doesn’t last forever. A horrible curse was laid upon the land and Eventide Hollow fell into despair. The source of the curse was also its only protection from it… the Holomento. The Holomento traps the souls of all who possess it, the mysterious book affixes itself to those who seek passage through the Hollow. If the Traveler dies, their soul is also added to the Holomento before it returns to its resting place awaiting the next traveler. Once acquired, the book is tied to the soul of the traveler holding it. The Holomento cannot leave the Eventide Hollow and therefore any Traveler who possesses it cannot leave the land.
