About

Hydefos is a fast paced shooter that challenges you to navigate Planet Tiar's chaotic environments. As one of five customizable ships you blast through levels filled with branching routes that change the layout between runs. Each decision opens new paths and encounters as you hunt down alien forces exploiting the planet's solar emergency. The game blends vertical and horizontal scrolling sections that shift between ocean trenches and outer space battlefields. Smooth scrolling was a technical challenge on the MSX but Hertz pulls it off with fluid level transitions. The branching design means no two attempts match making the 1989 release feel surprisingly fresh. You'll clash with swarms of invaders across varied terrain from radioactive wastelands to asteroid fields. While the story about a sunspot crisis is straightforward the gameplay variety and replay value keep it engaging.

Storyline

Planet Tiar is in crisis. The sunspots of this distant Earth-like planet's sun are disrupting its climate, and now evil invaders are taking advantage of this situation to try and conquer Tiar. The planet sends a distress signal to Earth, calling for a hero to fight the invader and save them. From the deep sea to the far reaches of space, it's up to you to fight and make sure Tiar does not fall.
