Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity drops you into a chaotic alternate timeline set one century before Breath of the Wild. Omega Force developed this title for Nintendo Switch while Nintendo published it back in late November 2020. The game blends hack and slash action with real-time strategy elements to tell the story of the Great Calamity. You step into the boots of Link, Zelda, and the four Champions as they attempt to stop Ganon before his attack succeeds. This is not just a side story but a direct prequel that fills in gaps left by the main series. The game supports single-player campaigns alongside multiplayer and co-op modes for split-screen sessions with friends.
You spend most of your time commanding one character while issuing orders to AI allies or switching between team members instantly. Each hero brings distinct weapons and special attacks that require timing and positioning to use effectively. You navigate large battlefields filled with hundreds of enemies ranging from small Bokoblins to massive Lynels. The strategy layer kicks in when you need to deploy units to defend specific zones or support your main character during boss fights. Battles feel frantic as you dodge rolling attacks and execute finishers to clear enemy waves. Completion requires managing resources and understanding enemy patterns since the game does not hold your hand through complex mechanics.
Metacritic gave the title a solid 78 out of 100, which reflects its mixed reception among critics and players alike. PlayPile data shows an average completion rate hovering around 65 percent for the main campaign. Most users report spending between 30 to 40 hours finishing the game including side quests. Community moods lean toward enthusiastic but frustrated by the repetitive nature of some battles. Review snippets frequently mention the fun factor of playing as favorite characters despite technical hiccups. The multiplayer mode sees lower engagement with only about 12 percent of players using co-op features regularly. Achievement hunters find plenty to do with over 50 unlockables scattered throughout the story.
This game works best if you enjoy fast-paced combat and don't mind grinding through repetitive encounters. The price point is reasonable for a full-length adventure on Nintendo Switch given the content volume. You will earn numerous achievements that track your progress through specific challenges or character milestones. Omega Force delivers solid mechanics even if the story feels familiar to long-time fans of the series. Avoid this title only if you dislike hack and slash games or find strategy elements too tedious during action sequences. The single-player campaign stands on its own merits for those who want more context before playing Breath of the Wild.
The story begins 100 years before the events in the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game. A young soldier named Link is asked to guard Princess Zelda. Impa, Zelda, and Link are shown. Link stands alongside the champions of Hyrule. They travel with Impa to four different regions to recruit mighty champions to help defend Hyrule against an impending attack from Calamity Ganon.
