Ice Hockey turns two-on-two arena action into a pixelated battle of sticks and reflexes. Each team fields a skater and a goalie, both free to roam the rink. The puck sticks to the blade of the nearest player, letting you steer it left or right before launching it in any of 32 directions. Steal possession by bumping opponents, block shots with your stick, or use the goalie’s mobility to thwart scoring attempts. Simple controls mask tricky physics, timing your moves right becomes key in this fast-paced match. Released in 1982, it’s one of the earliest hockey games to let players go head-to-head locally. While the blocky graphics and limited roster of moves feel dated, the 32 directional shots and agile goalies made it stand out on the Atari 2600. Nostalgia and the option to play with a friend keep it a curiosity for retro fans, even if the action lacks the depth of modern sports simulators.
