About Iconoclasts

Iconoclasts drops you into the boots of Robin, a licensed mechanic who refuses to follow orders. Released in early 2018 by Joakim Sandberg, this title blends tight platforming with deep narrative beats. You explore a dying world on PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and Switch while solving physics-based puzzles. The story focuses on a woman fighting against religious dogma and corporate overreach. It feels like a personal indie project rather than a corporate product. The visuals shift between gritty industrial zones and surreal dreamscapes. You spend your time wrenching machinery, talking to quirky locals, and uncovering why the planet is slowly shutting down.

Gameplay

Sessions involve running across platforms while managing Robin's toolbox. You switch between driving vehicles, piloting mechs, and using a wrench to solve environmental puzzles in real time. Combat requires dodging attacks from One Concern agents before you can dismantle their machines. A typical hour includes crossing large maps, interacting with non-player characters who reveal lore, and engaging in boss fights that test your timing. The controls feel responsive, letting you jump between vehicles instantly. You collect parts to upgrade your gear or fix broken paths. The game never holds your hand regarding objectives, forcing you to pay attention to environmental clues.

What Players Think

Critics and players alike have responded strongly to this title. Metacritic awarded it an 86 out of 100 while IGDB sits at 80.4 based on 95 ratings. The PlayPile community tracks an average completion rate near 72% across platforms. Most users report spending around 18 hours in a single playthrough to see all endings. Review snippets frequently mention the emotional weight of the story and the satisfaction of complex mech battles. Community mood tags show high scores for "Story" and "Visuals" but slightly lower notes for combat difficulty spikes. Players note that the game respects their time by avoiding tedious fetch quests common in other adventure titles.

PlayPile's Take

This game earns its spot if you value character depth over constant action. The price point on PC and consoles makes it a solid buy given the 20-hour runtime. You will unlock roughly 35 achievements if you explore every corner of the map. It is not for players who want mindless shooting or fast-paced arcade loops. The ending might leave you thinking long after credits roll. Stick with it through the slow mid-game sections because the payoff feels genuine. Skip this one only if you dislike narrative-heavy platformers.

Storyline

Robin just wants to be a mechanic and help people, but without a license she’s a sinner in Mother’s eyes. Ever since picking up her wrench, the world has been going nuts and she's wanted to bolt it back together. Now Penance is raining down on everyone she loves and One Concern agents are after her. But something big is going on – bigger than droughts of Ivory fuel and personal conflicts – and Robin’s in the thick of it.
