About

In Search of the Lost Words by Compedia Software & Hardware Ltd. is a 1996 PC point-and-click game that blends vocabulary building with a whimsical adventure. Players navigate a series of rooms and environments as a small blue creature with a red antenna, clicking objects to collect words that fill gaps in a story about an ancient magical egg. Each interaction triggers animations or minigames like memory matches, rewarding players with adjectives and adverbs needed later. The gameplay loops around discovery and pattern recognition, with some surprises like clicking a vase only to learn it’s “a parrot” hiding inside. The game stands out for its clever integration of language learning into its narrative, pushing players to stay alert for subtle clues. Its charm lies in the tactile joy of uncovering hidden words and the satisfaction of completing story segments with the right phrases. Though dated visually, its intuitive controls and lighthearted tone made it a quiet hit for its era, appealing to players who enjoy puzzles with a educational twist.

Storyline

A magical egg was used in ancient days by an evil king, with the help of an equally evil (of course, how could he be otherwise?) sorcerer, to conquer whole countries and enslave their peoples. But then the king died, and the sorcerer sealed his body in a temple on a distant island, while the egg was lost to history. The game starts when the egg hatches into a tiny blue creature with a little red antenna atop his head. Now he has to make his way through a series of rooms, buildings and outdoor environments until he reaches the far island where he can break the spell that would bring the evil king back to life, to enslave the world once again.
