About

I/O is a sci-fi mystery visual novel set in a near-future Tokyo where players take control of one of four characters tangled in a string of strange crimes after a rare lunar eclipse. The PlayStation 2 game leans into branching narratives and dialogue choices that shift the story’s path, blending personal drama with a large conspiracy. As events spiral, players must connect fragmented perspectives to uncover what’s driving the city’s chaos. A 2006 release from Regista, I/O earned a cult following for its layered script and ambiguous tone. The game’s tight structure and recurring motifs, like its reversed opening and closing lines, create cyclical mystery. While its dated presentation can’t mask the core strength of its writing, fans highlight the way small decisions ripple into major consequences. The interwoven stories of its cast, caught between love and loss in a destabilizing world, stick with players long after the credits roll.

Storyline

Monday, April 26, 2032 AD. 00:12 AM. Megalopolis Tokyo. A total lunar eclipse occurs for the first time in 3 years. Even though it's supposed to be a simple astronomical phenomenon, it soon sets off a series of unexpected events. Unexplainable mysteries, terrorist incidents, and network crime surge as if in unison. The truth mixes with lies as if the world is awake but still sleeping. Something has begun. Somewhere no one can see. Something no one knows about. This is a story of the chance meeting and tragic parting of the young men and women living in this world. And thus... "The beginning is the end, and the end is the beginning"
