Iron Brigade flips the script on tower defense by letting you command both foot soldiers and defensive turrets in real time. As part of a mobile trench unit you’ll place automated guns and traps while darting between cover to pick off enemies yourself. The game mixes tactical placement with on the move gunplay letting you switch between laying down defensive fire and sprinting to a new position. Each level gives you resources to upgrade weapons or add new types of defenses creating a constantly shifting battlefield. The game stands out for its deep customization with hundreds of weapon attachments and defensive modules to mix and match. Co op play lets you team up with friends or random players to take on campaigns across Europe Africa and the Pacific. Though released in 2011 its blend of strategy and action still draws praise from fans of creative defense mechanics. The goofy Monovision villains and Tim Schafer’s signature humor add a quirky edge to the war effort.
