Jackal is a top-down shooting game where you steer an armored jeep through enemy territory to rescue trapped soldiers. You guide a military unit through scrolling levels packed with foot soldiers, tanks, and turrets. The screen scrolls as you move, revealing new threats and objectives. Your jeep can fire in four directions while you dodge obstacles and clear paths. Each level ends with a POW extraction, adding a race-against-time urgency. The game requires quick reflexes and map management to survive escalating firefights. Jackal’s tight controls and relentless pacing made it a standout arcade port for the NES. Despite its 1986 arcade roots, the 1988 home version holds up with precise shooting and varied enemy types. Community ratings often highlight its replay value, as mastering routes and ammo conservation is key to finishing all stages. While not as technically advanced as later shooters, its no-frills action remains satisfying for fans of classic run-and-gun gameplay. The single-player mission structure keeps tension high without frills.
The Jackal unit is an elite group of four soldiers that have undergone a harsh training regimen to survive in any environment. The team is composed of Colonel Decker, Lieutenant Bob, Sergeant Quint and Corporal Grey. They have been given a mission to drive two armed jeeps into hostile territory in order to rescue and extract POWs.
