James Bond 007: The Duel is a side-scrolling shooter that casts 007 in a straightforward rescue mission. Armed with a pistol and a bomb, players navigate Bond through enemy bases to free hostages and trigger explosions. The gameplay leans on basic platforming and combat, with occasional boss fights against iconic villains like Jaws and Oddjob. Though simple, the levels offer tight controls and a clear objective structure, typical of 1990s Sega system design. The game stands out for its unexpected use of Timothy Dalton’s likeness, making it his final Bond-related project despite being released four years after his last film. Unlike most Bond games, it has an original story not tied to a movie or novel, a trend EA would later adopt for half of its Bond titles. As Domark’s last entry in the series, it’s a relic of early 90s license-holding before EA took over. Players familiar with the era’s Bond games might note its lack of polish compared to later entries but appreciate its no-frills approach.
