"John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is the best game in years to carry the Left 4 Dead torch forward, not because it copies the formula, but because it understands why that formula worked and builds on it with open regions, vehicles, and swarm pressure that feel purpose-built for co-op. The bot experience is serviceable on easier settings but cannot replace human coordination when the game demands real teamwork, and while the cosmetic economy can get a bit pricey, it never gets in the way of the core progression. At $40, it punches above its weight, and with the right squad it is exactly the kind of co-op shooter that sinks its hooks in and does not let go."

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando dropped on March 12, 2026, developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment. You can play this shooter adventure on PC, Xbox Series X|S, or PlayStation 5 as a single player or with friends. The story follows a desperate plan after an experiment to harness Earth's core power releases the Sludge God. This eldritch horror turns the soil into scum and people into monsters. A scientist hires a ragtag group of low-budget mercenaries known as Toxic Commandos to fix the mess. You pick a class, grab a weapon or a katana, and hop into a vehicle to blast through hordes. The game aims to channel the spirit of 80s action films without just copying them.
Sessions revolve around squad-based combat where you select a class that dictates your loadout and special abilities. You and three other players pile into armored vehicles or on foot to clear out massive hordes of mutated creatures. The loop involves driving through toxic zones, stopping to unload gunfire and grenades, then using unique skills to survive. Weapon variety is key since you can switch between standard firearms and melee katanas mid-fight. Co-op play feels essential here because the horde numbers overwhelm a lone player quickly. Controls feel responsive during these chaotic moments as you coordinate fire while navigating terrain transformed by the Sludge God. The multiplayer modes let you tackle specific objectives or just survive waves in endless scenarios.
Critics and players have settled on a solid but not perfect score with an OpenCritic rating of 74 out of 100. Only 60 percent of critics recommended the title, yet some reviews shine bright. SelectButton gave it a 90 and called it the best game in years to carry the Left 4 Dead torch forward. PlayStation Universe scored it 85 for delivering pure co-op chaos with confidence. The community moods reflect this split vibe where fans appreciate the weapon variety and vehicle design but note pacing issues. Average playtime suggests groups spend several hours together in long sessions. Review snippets highlight the satisfying gunfire and inventive vehicles as main draws despite the mixed critic consensus on overall execution.
This title works best if you have a dedicated group ready to coordinate tactics against overwhelming odds. The price point matches the standard for modern shooters, and achievement hunting offers plenty of time sink potential for completionists. Saber Interactive built a game that nails the chaotic fun of co-op but stumbles on some design choices that keep it from greatness. You should play this if you value weapon variety and vehicle combat over a tight single-player narrative. Avoid it if you prefer solo experiences or polished pacing. The katanas and massive hordes provide enough juice for a solid weekend run, even if the story feels generic.
In the near future, an experimental attempt to harness the power of the Earth’s core ends in a terrifying disaster: the release of the Sludge God. This eldritch abomination begins terraforming the area, turning soil to scum and the living to undead monsters. Luckily, the genius behind the experiment has a plan to make things right. All he needs is a team of competent, highly trained mercenaries to get the job done. … Unfortunately, they were all too expensive. Which is why he’s hired… The Toxic Commandos.
