Joust is a 1982 arcade platformer where you guide a knight riding a flying ostrich through a series of onscreen challenges. Using simple button and joystick controls you must dodge and strike opponents mounted on buzzards to advance through increasingly difficult levels. The game's straightforward one button combat and scrolling levels emphasize timing and quick reflexes over complex mechanics. Each round pushes you further while you joust with enemies in a battle for dominance. Despite its age the game's mechanics still feel sharp and responsive with a difficulty curve that tests even experienced players. Originally released during the golden age of arcades it found new life on modern platforms including PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The two player option adds competitive replay value as opponents race to outlast each other. Its mix of simple controls and tough challenges helped shape early multiplayer game design.
