"Overall, this game is cute. It’s useful for anyone learning Kana. However, there are some things that I don’t love about it. Its lack of word-teaching moments and its weird hyperfocus on doing the puzzles in the least number of turns aren’t made up for entirely by its cute pixel art or Kana learning. I think one of the things that bothered me a lot is that the title of the game is written in Katakana on the cover rather than the Hiragana you are actually learning. I don’t really understand who this game is for, but it was a fun way to spend an afternoon."

About

Joyo Kanji Quiz is a study-focused game designed to help players memorize 2,136 essential Japanese characters used in school curriculums. You'll work through quizzes that test recognition, meanings, and readings across grade levels, with a straightforward format that prioritizes repetition over engagement. The interface feels dated and clunky, leaning heavily on text-based drills that can stretch into long sessions. There's little in the way of rewards or variety beyond the core learning mechanics. Despite a 80% critic approval rate from sites like Hey Poor Player and But Why Tho, community feedback is split. Some praise its effectiveness for dedicated learners, comparing the challenge to solving structured puzzles. Others complain about the punishing length of study sessions and the unpolished presentation. With a 3/10 review from one player calling it "homework for 3 hours straight," it's clear this game works best for those who want minimal distractions and pure academic focus. Released in 2018, it remains a niche tool for serious students of Japanese language.

Absolute DISASTER of a game. I thought it was a fun quiz app but holy crap it's like doing homework for 3 HOURS STRAIGHT. The UI looks like it was made in 1999 and the 'simulator' part is just you typing kanji over and over UNTIL YOUR BRAIN QUITS. They should rename this to 'Edgi...
