Kabul Spy is a 1982 text-based adventure game where you play a secret agent hunting through Afghanistan to rescue a captured scientist. Developed for early PCs like the PC-9800 and Apple II, it blends spy fiction with interactive puzzles. You start in Pakistan, cross into Afghanistan with a local guide, then navigate war-torn regions while avoiding Soviet forces and rival spies. Dialogue and exploration drive the story as you track clues to locate your target. The game’s tense Cold War setting and labyrinthine choices create a gritty spy thriller. Players balance stealth with quick thinking, missteps mean capture or death. Though basic by modern standards, its geopolitical atmosphere and nonlinear design earned it a cult following among retro adventure fans. Community archives note its tricky puzzles and multiple endings, making it a test of both logic and nerve in a time when text adventures ruled the genre.
You are an agent searching Afghanistan to rescue Professor Eisenstadt. He was captured in May of 1981, perhaps by the KGB. An unfortunate incident because of his, shall we say, sensitive knowledge. You will have to be sure no one gets his information. But then, you are not known for your works of charity. You will begin in Bahawalpur, Pakistan, and move northward toward the Afghanistan border. A guide will meet you in the town of Quetta and help you cross into Afghanistan. Then you are on your own. Let's hope you are as clever as you are ruthless. Salam!
