Kaeri Yume is a fan-made adventure game inspired by the Yume Nikki series. You play as H2O a girl riding a bus who enters surreal dreamscapes to gather visual and audio effects. The gameplay loops around wandering shifting environments collecting items that alter the world in minor ways. Simple mechanics focus on exploration over storytelling with each dream having distinct art styles and hidden collectibles. Made by indie developer Sute Inu A this 2014 PC title has a small but devoted following. While brief and minimalistic its charm comes from quirky dream logic and the satisfaction of piecing together its loose mysteries. Fans of experimental indie games might appreciate its DIY spirit though its abstract nature won’t appeal to everyone.
