Kaiketsu Yanchamaru is a side-scrolling action game where you play as a ninja named Kid Niki on a mission to rescue his captured girlfriend. The story kicks off when a mysterious arrow delivered by a falling bird sets him off on a journey through ancient temples, forests, and lava pits. You’ll run, jump, and punch through enemies while dodging traps and collecting power-ups. The gameplay leans heavily into tight platforming and basic combat, with a focus on fast reflexes and memorizing stage layouts. The game’s biggest hook is its quirky charm and surprisingly challenging difficulty. Despite its 1986 release, the levels require precise timing and quick thinking, making it more punishing than many of its contemporaries. In Japan, it was titled Kaiketsu Yanchamaru, but the North American version rebranded it with a new hero and story.
