"KAMIKO is a short but fun Nintendo Switch release. A single run can take as little as 30 minutes to complete, and once you're done you can do it all over again with a different character. Three complete runs will therefore take less than 2 hours, but it's a very entertaining ride while it lasts. The game is only $4.99 and its gameplay, music and graphics make it well worth the price of admission. There's also some extra secrets to find in this adventure, not to mention that the game will record your time for each character so that you can aim to speedrun the game. And perhaps something good will happen when you complete the game with all three characters…"

Kamiko is a side-scrolling action-puzzle game inspired by Japanese Shinto mythology. You play as a shrine maiden battling demons and solving environmental puzzles to progress through stages. Developed by kan.kikuchi and published by Flyhigh Works, it launched in 2017 for consoles and PC. The game blends beat ’em up combat with stage-based challenges where you must break magical Torii gates by manipulating the environment. It’s a short, self-contained experience focused on quick bursts of gameplay and clever stage design. Best for players who enjoy mixing action with light puzzle elements and aren’t intimidated by a steep difficulty curve.
Each stage forces you to tackle two simultaneous challenges: fending off waves of demons and figuring out how to dismantle Torii gates blocking your path. Combat is fast and punchy, relying on button-mashing combos and timing-based dodges. The twist is that solving puzzles often requires using your environment, like redirecting water to weaken a gate or luring enemies into traps. Stages escalate in complexity, with later levels demanding precise timing and memorization of enemy patterns. You’ll spend most sessions alternating between brawling and problem-solving, often retrying sections to unlock hidden paths. The controls are responsive but lack depth, prioritizing simplicity over customization.
Critics gave Kamiko a 75/100 on IGDB (26 reviews), with praise for its creative stage design but criticism for its brevity and repetitive aesthetic. Players average 32.2% of achievements, suggesting many quit before mastering the final challenges. The rarest achievement, “Savior of the Transient World,” is unlocked by just 4.7% of players, indicative of its punishing final boss. Community moods lean split: some call it a “charming, undercooked indie gem,” while others gripe about its “unforgiving difficulty and lack of polish.” Average playtime is around 5, 7 hours, with most players beating the base story but struggling to 100% it.
Kamiko is a niche pick for fans of retro-style arcade action and puzzle-platformers. At its original $15, $20 price range, it’s a low-risk purchase for those who enjoy bite-sized challenges and don’t mind a steep learning curve. The 27 achievements add replay value, but the high unlock thresholds might deter casual players. If you’re looking for a quick, tough-as-nails brawler with a dash of Shinto-inspired creativity, give it a shot. Otherwise, its flaws and limited content might not justify the time investment.
The player controls "Kamiko," a shrine maiden who fights against demons, and aims to clear each stage by defeating demons that block her way and unraveling the riddle of the gimmick.
