Kanon is a visual novel adventure by Key that blends heartfelt storytelling with supernatural mystery. You play as Yuichi Aizawa, a high schooler returning to a coastal town seven years after a traumatic departure. As Yuichi reconnects with his cousin Nayuki and her mother, fragmented memories of his past resurface. The narrative unfolds through branching choices, revealing hidden connections and eerie phenomena tied to the town’s history. The remastered version polishes the original with HD artwork, color-tuned scenes, and full voice acting from past releases, plus new recordings for Shiori’s lines. Key’s reputation for emotional depth shines in this updated package, which adds touchscreen navigation for modern playability. While the story’s structure is linear, character interactions and moral dilemmas offer replay value for those seeking different outcomes. Available on PC and Nintendo Switch since April 2023, it’s a self-contained experience best suited for fans of narrative-driven games. Though the pacing slows during exposition-heavy scenes, the atmospheric setting and character dynamics keep the story engaging through its bittersweet resolution.
Yuichi Aizawa is a second-year high school student who visited the city where the story takes place seven years before Kanon's beginning. The story opens on Wednesday, January 6, 1999, when Yuichi arrives in the city and is very detached from it and its inhabitants. Before his return, it is decided that he is to stay with his first cousin, Nayuki Minase, and her mother, Akiko. After his long absence, Yuichi has forgotten almost everything except minor details of what happened seven years before and needs to be reminded of what he left behind. Nayuki initially tries repeatedly to jog his memory but is unsuccessful. Throughout the story, as he learns about the supernatural undertones of the city, Yuichi is reminded of the events of seven years ago.
