Kids on Site lets you play with heavy machinery in a open sandbox. As a kid, you control an excavator, bulldozer, steamroller or wrecking ball to complete simple tasks like loading dirt onto trucks. The controls are basic, left, right and an action button, which makes it easy to focus on messing around. Instead of following directions you can knock down buildings, crush cars or dig random holes. The game uses full-motion video to show your actions with exaggerated physical comedy. Each machine feels distinct, from the slow power of a bulldozer to the swinging chaos of a wrecking ball. The biggest hook is the variety of FMV sequences that change based on your actions. Breaking a roadblock with the excavator might lead to driving on a highway one time and a rollercoaster another. The slapstick humor and absurd scenarios keep things fresh across multiple playthroughs. Released in 1994, it’s a quirky blend of simulation and mischief that still feels oddly ahead of its time.
