About Kill la Kill: If

Kill la Kill: If drops you into a new adventure where you play as Satsuki Kiryuin instead of the usual hero Ryuko. Developed by APLUS Co., Ltd. and published by Arc System Works, this title launched on July 25, 2019 for PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch. It mixes arcade fighting with story mode elements to tell a fresh tale scripted by original writer Kazuki Nakashima. You fight through brand new scenarios that explore Satsuki's rivalry with Ryuko. The game brings the anime's chaotic energy to life without relying on the main protagonist's perspective. It is a straightforward beat em up with a heavy focus on narrative progression and character specific combat moves.

Gameplay

You spend most of your time controlling Satsuki while she battles various enemies in side scrolling stages. The core loop involves moving left or right, jumping over obstacles, and executing combos to deplete enemy health bars. Combat feels snappy with a focus on her signature Scissor Blade moves rather than the frantic button mashing seen in other entries. You can switch between different attack styles depending on the opponent you face. The single player campaign guides you through new story chapters that expand on the anime lore. Multiplayer modes let you test your skills against friends in quick matches. Controls are simple enough to pick up immediately, but landing perfect combos requires some practice to master the timing.

What Players Think

Critics and players have given this entry a mixed reception with scores hovering around the mid-sixties. Metacritic rates it 66 out of 100 while IGDB lists an average score of 63.2 based on 34 ratings. The community seems to enjoy the fresh story perspective but finds the combat repetitive over time. Average playtime sits at roughly eight hours for a standard run through the main campaign. Completion rates are modest since many players skip multiplayer entirely. Achievements present a real challenge with only 11.4 percent of players unlocking them on average. The rarest trophy, "Don't Lose Your Way," remains locked by over 98 percent of the user base at just a 1.60 unlock rate.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth buying if you are a diehard fan who specifically wants to see Satsuki take the lead. The story mode offers about eight hours of content, and the price of roughly $17.99 feels fair for that length. However, the combat lacks depth beyond basic combos, so it will not appeal to fighting game purists. The achievement system is punishingly hard with that 1.60 percent unlock rate for the rarest item. You should pick this up only if you need the new narrative content and do not mind a linear experience. It serves its purpose as an anime tie-in without trying to reinvent the genre.
