King & Balloon is a 1980 arcade shooter where two green-clad knights defend a monarch from floating enemies. You control the pair as they fire cannons upward to prevent balloons from snatching the king. Balloons descend the screen, shooting projectiles while players must balance defending their ruler and clearing waves. Each level resets if the king is captured but allows respawns without losing lives unless the king escapes. What stands out is the risk-reward design. Balloons pause entirely when one grabs the king, letting you target enemies high above before timing a rescue. This mechanic turns defense into a tactical rhythm rather than pure reflexes. It also features early speech synthesis, Japan and US versions use different vocal tones, with the king saying things like "Bye bye!" as he floats away. The game’s simple but clever systems earned it a cult following among retro players, often praised for its fresh take on shoot-'em-up pacing.
