About Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories serves as the direct sequel to the original PlayStation title and stands as a Game Boy Advance exclusive from 2004. Jupiter Corporation handled development while Nintendo published the handheld entry in this massive franchise. The story picks up immediately after Sora wakes up on the beach, only to find himself trapped inside Castle Oblivion. This place erases memories, forcing our hero to fight his way down through floors that shift based on cards pulled from his past. You will navigate between white flower-decorated hallways and familiar Disney settings like Halloween Town or Agrabah. It runs a turn-based system designed specifically for the portable hardware of its era. The game arrived in November 2004 to fill the gap between major console releases.

Gameplay

You spend every moment managing a deck of cards that dictate your combat actions rather than holding a traditional weapon. Each card represents an attack, a magic spell, or a summon and dictates how much health you regain after use. You drag these cards onto targets to perform moves while your partner acts on his own. The real skill lies in building decks that work together before a battle begins because you cannot change them mid-fight. You must plan which enemies to pull from the enemy deck to control the flow of combat. Exploration involves moving through rooms where you interact with objects and NPCs to progress the story. Multiplayer allows you to trade cards or challenge friends directly on the same device. The controls feel tight enough for quick decisions during intense fights.

What Players Think

The PlayPile data shows this title holds a solid 79.2 out of 100 from 124 user ratings on IGDB. Players seem to appreciate the card mechanic despite the smaller screen size. Average playtime sits around 18 hours for a standard run, though completionists spend closer to 25 hours chasing every secret. Community moods lean heavily toward nostalgic approval with a 72 percent positive sentiment score. Many users note that the transition from action RPG to strategy feels jarring at first but grows on you. Review snippets frequently mention the difficulty spike in the later floors as a major hurdle. Only about 40 percent of players report completing all optional challenges without guides. The game maintains a dedicated following despite being nearly two decades old.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth your time if you already enjoy the Kingdom Hearts timeline or want to see how Jupiter adapted the series for handhelds. The price on the secondary market remains reasonable for a complete cartridge with box. There are no official achievements to chase since this predates modern systems, but collecting all memory cards offers accomplishment. You should know that the turn-based combat will not appeal to fans looking for pure action. The story connects directly to Birth by Sleep and 358/2 Days, making it essential lore despite its niche platform. Play this if you want a complete picture of Sora's early adventures rather than just a generic RPG experience.

Storyline

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories takes place directly after the ending of the first game, Kingdom Hearts. The game is set in Castle Oblivion, a mysterious castle kept by Lord Marluxia. Sora and his teammates are told that the castle causes visitors to lose their memories upon entering. The lobby and areas between floors are white with flower-themed decorations, but each floor can be transformed into a different world from the first Kingdom Hearts game using "world cards" created from Sora's memories. Like before, many of the worlds are based on Disney films while the rest were created by Square Enix.
