Kingdom Hearts Final Mix is a revised PlayStation 2 RPG that builds on the original Japanese release with expanded story beats and gameplay adjustments. You play as Sora navigating a blend of Disney worlds and original realms, battling Heartless with magic and Keyblades. The story follows Sora’s search for his friends Riku and Kairi while confronting a shadowy force. Combat mixes real-time action with menu-based spellcasting, letting you upgrade abilities and collect items across stages. Optional bosses and a new difficulty mode add replay value, alongside a feature to skip seen cutscenes. This version adds key narrative context through new scenes, like Riku’s struggles in Hollow Bastion and the Realm of Darkness, clarified with text overlays since no new voice lines were recorded. A post-victory Cloud vs. Sephiroth scene and expanded hints about the sequel deepen the lore. The Oathkeeper charm’s early introduction ties character moments together. Though Japan-only on release, its refinements made it a foundation for later international ports. Series fans note it bridges the first game and Kingdom Hearts II more clearly than prior editions.
Several new cutscenes were added. The first, shown after Sora fights Leon in Traverse Town, has Riku lost in Hollow Bastion, calling out for his friends and Maleficent looking on. Another, played after Sora speaks to Kairi in the underground waterway in Traverse Town, showed Riku lost in the Realm of Darkness after Ansem, Seeker of Darkness took his body. There, he is assisted by King Mickey who reveals that he has the realm's Keyblade. Neither of these cutscenes used any new audio and instead the subtitles were seen on a black screen. An optional cutscene was a confrontation between Cloud and Sephiroth, seen after the player defeats Sephiroth. Cutscenes were provided for the Unknown, using spliced voice acting for Sora and Goofy, but shaking text on a black screen for the Unknown. A minor cutscene was also added near the start of the game on the second day on Destiny Islands, where it is revealed that the lucky charm Kairi makes out of Thalassa Shells is the Oathkeeper charm she later gives to Sora.
