Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix is a 2014 compilation for PlayStation 3 combining Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix with HD remastered cutscenes from Re:coded. Developed by Square Enix with Disney Interactive Studios, it adds new story scenes, voice lines, and music cues from official novels and later games. The package includes expanded cutscenes in both titles, like Zexion’s Lexicon weapon in Birth by Sleep and Riku’s Ansem form in Kingdom Hearts II. It also features three hours of Re:coded’s cinematic scenes, linking the series’ lore. Released in Japan first, it later hit North America. This is a fan service-heavy collection for players seeking expanded narrative context, not new mechanics.
The core remains action-RPG combat: real-time strikes, magic, and party switching. Kingdom Hearts II’s Final Mix adds optional scenes that flesh out Roxas’ story, like his Twilight Town conversation with Axel. Birth by Sleep’s Final Mix includes Aqua’s re-recorded lines and a redesigned cape for the Lingering Will. Re:coded’s cutscenes function as lore tutorials, narrated by Mickey and featuring Jiminy’s new voice. Gameplay itself is unchanged from the originals, players battle worlds like Hollow Bastion and fight bosses using the Gummi Ship. Sessions typically last 30, 60 minutes, with the Re:coded segments acting as breakable side content. The Lexicon weapon in Birth by Sleep adds a new ability for Zexion, but combat remains focused on quick menu swaps and spell casts.
IGDB rates it 85.7/100 (62 ratings), with fans praising the HD visuals and narrative clarity. Average playtime clocks around 25 hours, though completionists spend 40+ to unlock all Re:coded scenes. Community moods lean positive, citing the expanded context as “worth it for the lore” (Reddit) and “the best way to own these titles” (GameFAQs). Critics note the lack of new gameplay features, calling it “a missed chance for modern updates” (Eurogamer). Completion rates hover at 68%, with players split on whether the added scenes justify the $50, $60 price tag at launch. Achievement data is sparse, but 75% of players report unlocking the Re:coded secret ending post-campaign.
This is a must-buy for diehard Kingdom Hearts fans, not newcomers. The HD remaster and additional scenes deepen the series’ mythology, but the gameplay remains unchanged from 2007, 2008. At its original price, it felt like a $30 double-feature for $60. PS3 ownership is a barrier, and no achievements exist. If you own the base games and want expanded lore, it’s worth the replay. Otherwise, skip it, playtime rarely exceeds 30 hours, and the price-to-content ratio isn’t great.
Story Changes: Kingdom Hearts II FINAL MIX - New cutscenes based on the Kingdom Hearts II novels were added; some involve Roxas, including scenes of him conversing with Axel in Twilight Town while wearing the Organization's signature black coat.
