You’re the bad guy here. King’s Dungeon flips the script by making you the Dark Lord defending your castle from heroes trying to slay you. Instead of hacking and looting, you strategize with summoned minions and environmental traps to whittle down waves of invaders. Each fallen hero gives you experience points to unlock stronger creatures and tools. The game’s 40 floors ratchet up the difficulty as you balance resource management with tactical defense. This 1992 title carved out a niche with its reverse-RPG twist. While most dungeon crawls put you in the hero’s boots, King’s Dungeon’s focus on attrition and escalation feels oddly modern. It ran on the Sharp X68000, a Japan-only system that’s now a relic. Despite its age, it’s remembered for its clever role reversal and the grindy satisfaction of building your dark empire. Small but dedicated retro communities still circle back to its pixelated halls every now and then.
